Brink, André Philippus
Brink, André Philippus ( 1935 – ),South African playwright, novelist, short story writer, and critic, born in Vrede, Orange Free State, and educated at Potchefstroom University and ( 1959 – 61 ) at the Sorbonne in Paris. Since 1991 he has been professor of English literature at the University of Cape Town. A prolific author who writes in both English and Afrikaans, he was widely snubbed during the era of apartheid by the Afrikaans literary community for his dissident views. His Kennis van die aand ( 1973 ), translated into English as Looking on Darkness ( 1974 ), was banned by the South African government and brought him to international notice. It tells the story of a coloured actor, Joseph Malan, who after training in London returns to South Africa to work against apartheid by cultural means.
