Balaam, Sir
Balaam, Sir,the subject of satire in Pope's Moral Essays (Ep. iii. 339–402), a religious ‘Dissenter’ and frugal citizen who, tempted by wealth, becomes a corrupt courtier. He has been tentatively identified as Thomas Pitt ( 1653 – 1726 ), grandfather of William Pitt the elder.
