dramatic critic, born in Lancashire, the son of a cotton manufacturer's agent; he was educated at Manchester Grammar School, then worked in his father's business for some years. He began to write for the
Manchester Guardian
in
1907
, and later settled in London, where he wrote
theatre
criticism for the
Sunday Times
.
Agate
also published novels and, more memorably, a nine-part autobiography, Ego (
1935
–
48
), in the form of a diary, recording his life in literary and theatrical London and describing the personalities of the day.
