Ackermann, Rudolph

Ackermann, Rudolph ( 1764 – 1834 ),
German lithographer who settled in London and opened a print shop in the Strand in 1795 . He played a major role in establishing lithography as a fine art, and published many handsome coloured-plate books with lithographs, hand-coloured aquatints, etc., in association with Prout, A. C. Pugin , Rowlandson , and other artists. His publications include the Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions, etc. ( 1809 – 28 ); The Microcosm of London (3 vols, 1808 – 11 ), an antiquarian and topographical work by W. Combe ; and the gift-book annual Forget-Me-Not, of which the first issue appeared in 1825 . Combe's The Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of the Picturesque first appeared as ‘The Schoolmaster's Tour’ in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine ( 1809 – 11 ).
