Académie française

Académie française,
a French literary academy, established by Richelieu in 1634 to regulate and maintain the standards of the French language. One of its functions is the compilation and revision of a French dictionary, the first edition of which appeared in 1694 and the eighth in 1932 – 5 . The Académie has, throughout its history, exercised a considerable influence on the course of French intellectual life.
