The Abbot

Abbot, The,
a novel by Sir W. Scott , published 1820 , a sequel to The Monastery . This novel, set around the escape of Mary Queen of Scots from Loch Leven, largely redeemed the failure of The Monastery. It is much better constructed, but is remembered now mainly for the portrait of Mary herself, for attracting tourist trade to Loch Leven, and for being the first sequel novel in English, thus influencing the work of Balzac , Trollope , and many other 19th-cent. novelists.
