The Civil War directly influences the outcome of this story because the protagonist, Peyton Farquhar, is executed for attempting to complete an act of sabotage against the Confederate army.  Because Farquhar lives in the South, he is expected to be a Confederate sympathizer, if not completely supportive of the Confederate cause.  However, a Federal scout (dressed in Confederate gray) visits Farquhar and provides him with the valuable information necessary to facilitate the burning of the Owl Creek Bridge.  Because Farquhar is presumably hanged from that bridge, we know that he is unable to complete the act of burning it; because he is executed by the Federal army, we know that he has wronged them.
