Posted by scarletpimpernel on Wednesday October 28, 2009 at 11:31 AMBoth "Paul's Case" and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" rely heavily upon the stream-of-consciousness technique, meaning that they take place in a character's head and stream that character's thoughts. Specifically, in regards to death, the authors portray the idea of escaping one's fate/death and viewing the life each character had right up to his death. In "Bridge," Peyton Farquhar actually creates another reality in his head right before his execution. In a sense, Paul does the same thing before the reader discovers that he is deceased.
