Although the story was written in the late 1800s, the narrative is set during the American Civil War, which was fought from 1861 to 1865. The war arose out of a conflict between the states of the American South, which wanted to withdraw from the Union, and the states of the American North, which, led by President Abraham Lincoln, were determined to keep the Union together. During this time the Southern states formed their own confederacy, a loose association of member states.
