Rhodes
Rhodes(see map: Greece and the Aegean world), largest island of the mod. Dodecanese (c.1400 sq. km.), lying close to the mainland of Caria.
The earlier prehistory of Rhodes is unclear, but by the 16th cent. (LM I) the Minoans (see Minoan civilization) had established a settlement at Trianda on the NW coast, presumably to facilitate trade between Crete and the eastern Mediterranean. The Minoans were followed in the 14th cent. (LH IIIA1) by Mycenaeans, apparently from the Peloponnese, whose numerous chamber-tomb cemeteries suggest a more thorough colonization of the island. Although no Mycenaean settlements have as yet been excavated, the grave offerings, from the cemetery at Ialysus in particular, indicate considerable prosperity.
