Nerva, Marcus Cocceius,
Roman emperor AD 96–8, grandson of Tiberius' friend Marcus Cocceius Nerva, was born possibly in AD 35. His family, which came from the old Latin colony of Narnia and acquired distinction during the Civil Wars, had a remote connection with the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Nerva it seems did not serve as a provincial governor or hold any senior administrative post, but was influential as a confidant of Nero, who admired his poetry and presented him with triumphal ornaments and other honours after the suppression of the conspiracy of Gaius Calpurnius Piso in 65. Despite this he was high in the Flavians' favour, being ordinary consul with Vespasian in 71 and again in 90 with Domitian.

Nerva was seemingly not party to the plot to murder Domitian and was approached by the conspirators only after several others had rebuffed them....
