Education, Military.Military education involves the professional preparation of officers to lead armed forces effectively in peace and war. It can be distinguished from indoctrination (the transmission of group values, traditions, and attitudes) and training (the development of concrete manual and mental skills) in that it seeks to instill an understanding of abstract principles and theory and to develop effective patterns of thought and communication.
Education has been linked closely with the growth of professionalism in the military forces of the United States since the mid‐nineteenth century.
