Yazoo Frauds

Yazoo Frauds,
Georgia land speculation (1795), in which four companies bribed the state legislature, in order to obtain grants for large areas of land to which the state itself had doubtful claims. This territory lay in the present Alabama and Mississippi, some near the Yazoo River. The sale was revoked the following year. The Georgia Spec; or, Land in the Moon (1797), a lost play by Royall Tyler, ridiculed the scheme, and Sarah Wood's Dorval; or, The Speculator (1801) is also concerned with the episode.
