Yale Series of Younger Poets
Yale Series of Younger Poets,volumes issued annually since 1919 by Yale University Press to print the work of promising American poets under 40 who have not previously published a book of poetry. Stephen Vincent Benét, MacLeish, Auden, and Dudley Fitts have been judges of manuscripts submitted for this literary award and editors of the published books. Winners have included Hervey Allen (1921), Oscar Williams (1922), Paul Engle (1932), James Agee (1934), Muriel Rukeyser (1935), Ted Olson (1937), William Meredith (1946), Eve Merriam (1948), Adrienne Rich (1952), W.S. Merwin (1953), Daniel Hoffman (1955), John Ashbery (1956), James Wright (1957), John Hollander (1958), William Dickey (1959), Alan Dugan (1961), Jean Valentine (1965), Peter Davidson (1964), James Tate (1966), and Robert Hass (1972).
