Ward, Ned [Edward]
Ward, Ned [Edward]( 1667–1731),English poet, satirist, and tavern keeper, probably did not come to America as he alleged in A Trip to New England. With a Character of the Country and People, both English and Indians (London, 1699), but got his material from secondary sources and his imagination. This lively account briefly discusses blue laws, witchcraft, and racy aspects of the life of the Puritans, characterized as “Saints without Religion, Traders without Honesty, Christians without Charity …Neighbours without Amity, Faithless Friends, Implacable Enemies, and Rich Men without Money.”
