Congregational minister of Massachusetts, author of The Grounds and Rules of Musick Explained; or, an Introduction to the Art of Singing by Note (1721); a book of poems, The Sweet Psalmist of Israel (1722); and an attack on radical theological views, A Choice Dialogue Between John Faustus, a Conjuror, and Jack Tory, His Friend (1720), for which material was gathered by his uncle, Cotton Mather.
