Shaara, Michael [Joseph, Jr.]( 1929–88),
New Jersey-born author, after graduation from Rutgers and service as a paratrooper was a professor of English at Florida State University (1961–73). His novels are The Broken Place (1968), about a soldier who is a boxer, and The Killer Angels (1974, Pulitzer Prize), which presents the Battle of Gettysburg as seen by both Northern and Southern officers.
