Sanchez, Sonia

Sanchez, Sonia( 1934– ),
African-American poet born in Birmingham, educated at Hunter College, New York City. Identifying solely with other African-Americans and writing in urban speech rhythms and dialect, her titles explain her themes: Homecoming (1964), We a BaddDDD People (1970), It's a New Day: Poems for Young Brothas and Sistuhs (1971), Ima Talken bout the Nation of Islam (1972), A Blues Book for Blue Black Magical Women (1973), I've Been a Woman: New and Selected Poems (1978), Homegirls and Handgrenades (1984), and Under a Soprano Sky (1987). In 1971 she edited Three Hundred and Sixty Degrees of Blackness Comin' at You. She has been a full professor at the University of Pennsylvania since 1979.
