Rice, Anne( 1941– ),
novelist born in New Orleans and educated in various colleges in California including Berkeley. Rice began to develop a cult following with her Vampire Chronicles series, of which the first, Interview with the Vampire (1976), is best known. The point of view is that of the vampire, not the victim, a reversal that speaks to the reader's own darkest shadow self. Others in the series include The Vampire Lestat (1985), The Queen of the Damned (1988), Blackwood Farm (2002), and Blood Canticle (2003). Vittorio the Vampire (1999) launched a series featuring a new set of vampire characters.
