Read, Thomas Buchanan
Read, Thomas Buchanan( 1822–72),Pennsylvania poetaster and minor painter, wrote more than ten volumes of verse, but is best remembered for Sheridan's Ride, a short piece describing the breakneck journey of General Philip Sheridan 20 miles from Winchester to rally his retreating army, which was also the subject of his best-known painting. The poem was published in A Summer Story, Sheridan's Ride, and Other Poems (1865). The Wagoner of the Alleghanies (1862) is a poem of the Revolutionary War. His Poetical Works were collected in 3 volumes (1866).
