Price, Reynolds( 1933– ),North Carolina-born author, graduated from Duke and has taught there, after a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford. His fiction, set in his native state, includes A Long and Happy Life (1962) and A Generous Man (1963), both concerning a small-town North Carolina family; and Love and Work (1968), about a young teacher-novelist's problems with marriage and writing. The Surface of Earth (1975), presenting the saga of rural Virginia and North Carolina families during the first 40 years of the 20th century, is the first volume of a trilogy continued in The Source of Light (1982) and completed with The Promise of Rest (1995). Other novels are Kate Vaiden (1986), telling of a woman's new relationship with a son deserted many years early and of other strange associations; Good Hearts (1988), treating the mid-life experiences of characters from the early A Long and Happy...
