Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats,by T.S. Eliot, published in 1939. It collects 15 humorous poems in Edward Lear-like verse, originally written for children Eliot knew. The little volume begins with the significance of “The Naming of Cats” and continues through the presentation of such diverse felines as Growltiger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Gus: The Theatre Cat, Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town, Cat Morgan, and Old Deuteronomy, “a cat who has lived many lives in succession. He was famous in proverb and famous in rhyme A long while before Queen Victoria's accession.” A very popular musical and dancing show titled Cats was adapted from Eliot's book and produced in London (1981) and New York (1982).
