Ode Sung at the Occasion of Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead,delivered at Charleston (1867), was written by Timrod and published in his Poems (1873). In five quatrains of octosyllabic lines, this elegy on “martyrs of the fallen cause” declares that, though no marble column yet honors their defeated valor, the blossom of their fame is blown,
And somewhere, waiting for its birth,
The shaft is in the stone.
