National Book Critics Circle,organization of 300 professional critics and editors, founded (1974) to select the “most distinguished” volumes of fiction, general nonfiction, poetry, and criticism of the preceding year. Each member nominates three books in each category, and the board of directors, which may add selections of its own, votes to elect the winners.
