Madison, Dolly (Dolley Payne Madison)
Madison, Dolly (Dolley Payne Madison)( 1768–1849),wife of James Madison, was famous as a leader of Washington society, acting as “first lady” during Jefferson's incumbency as well as her husband's. When the British burned the White House during their invasion of Washington (1814), she rescued many important state documents. Her Memoirs and Letters was published in 1886.
