California novelist, whose works include Corpus of Joe Bailey (1953) and its sequel, Report from Beau Harbor (1971), wry depictions of generational and ideological conflicts in California families; Warlock (1958), set in a Southwest frontier mining town during the 1880s; The Downhill Racers (1963), about skiing enthusiasts; The Adelita (1975), concerning an American's involvement in the Mexican Revolution; The Bad Lands (1978), portraying conflicts between cattlemen and farmers in South Dakota during the 1880s; Lullaby (1982), the story of dreadful events in the life of a family in Hawaii, perhaps attributable to an ancient curse; The Children of the Sun (1983), treating the voyage of Cabeza de Vaca; The Coming of the Kid (1985), dwelling on long-established regional myths; and Apaches (1986), about the war in New Mexico against Apaches in the 1880s....
