Commager, Henry Steele

Commager, Henry Steele( 1902– ),
educated at the University of Chicago and in Denmark and England, has been a professor of history at New York University (1926–38), Columbia (1939–56), and Amherst (1956–72). His many books include The Growth of the American Republic (2 vols., 1930), with S.E. Morison; Theodore Parker (1936); The American Mind (1951); The Empire of Reason (1977); and The Era of Reform (1982).
