Caldwell, [Janet] Taylor( 1900–1985),English-born novelist, reared in the U.S., began her career of writing very popular and dramatic novels, usually set in the past, with Dynasty of Death (1938), about wealthy families of munitions manufacturers, a saga continued in The Eagles Gather (1940) and The Final Hour (1944). Other novels include The Earth Is The Lord's (1941), about Genghis Khan; Time No Longer (1941), about Nazi Germany, and written under the pseudonym Max Reiner; The Arm and the Darkness (1943), set in 16th-century France; This Side of Innocence (1946), about rich and powerful New York families in the Gilded Age; Dear and Glorious Physician (1959); A Prologue to Love (1961); A Pillar of Iron (1965), a fictive life of Cicero; and Answer as a Man (1981), her thirty-sixth novel, about a rags-to-riches American at the beginning of the 20th century....
