Adams, Abigail [Smith],( 1744–1818),
wife of John Adams, from whom she had to be separated for long periods during the Revolution, occasioning her frequent, loving, lively, and outspoken letters. She also engaged in much correspondence with other family members. Her charming letters were published by her grandson Charles Francis Adams as Letters of Mrs. Adams … (2 vols., 1840) and Familiar Letters of John Adams and His Wife (1876). Better edited texts appear in the Adams Papers.
