Abbott, Jacob( 1803–79).
Massachusetts educator and Congregational clergyman, whose first book, The Young Christian (1832), was followed by some 200 similar works. The best known are the 28 volumes of the Rollo series (1835ff.), which are instructive stories for children in the genre of Sandford and Merton. Many of Abbott's books were written in collaboration with his brother John S.C. Abbott (1805–77).
