The dog persuades the master to go to a saloon, and after the master is drunk, he takes the leash and collar off the dog and tries to set him free. The dog refuses to leave the master, and the master realizes that he only gets so much life to live, and he was wasting it living in a loveless marriage in a boring apartment. So they set off for the Rocky Mountains, and the master tells the dog he will change his name from the undignified "Lovey" to the more common "Pete," which made the dog so happy he remarks, "if I'd had five tails I couldn't have done enough wagging to do justice to the occasion."
