Lowry uses fairy tales in chapter two to represent the idea that everything around the main characters has changed, except for the fairy tales told to them by their father. These fairy tales can be seen as symbols, representatives of youth and childhood innocence. As the world around them falls into the unfamiliar, the girls are able to hold onto what they know, the fairy tales, in order to hold on to their family, their faith, their traditions and their innocence. It feels good to them to have something familiar around when everything else is topsy-turvy.
