Norman Kingsley Mailer grew up in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Harvard University, and served in the Philippines in World War II. In 1948, he became a best-selling author with the publication of his first novel, The Naked and the Dead. His second novel, Barbary Shore (1951), which concerned Cold War politics, received a mixed reception, and his third novel, The Deer Park (1955), an exposé of Hollywood, also failed to match the success of his first novel.
