Freddie Akimoto
Freddie Akimoto is a Japanese American friend of Ichiro. Like Ichiro, Freddie has just returned to Seattle, although whether he was in an internment camp or a prison is not stated. Freddie now has a defiant attitude. He lives recklessly, filling his time with activities such as drinking, fighting, womanizing, playing poker, and going to the movies. He lives this way to distract himself from his own unhappiness. Ichiro thinks Freddie is just running away from reality, but Freddie thinks Ichiro is stuck in a rut.
