The barrenness of the landscape is certainly appropriate as the novel's protagonist explores the barrenness of humanity in modern times. As the sheriff tracks Chigurh tracking Moss, the dusty setting isolates the characters in the landscape from real human contact. Indeed, Bell seems only to sink deeper into his own mind, his reminiscing about the war, and into old age while following the carnage trail left in unpopulated deserts and sparsely populated fringe towns.
