Wiesel compares his new life to a cattle wagon because he is being completely sealed off from the world that he knows. He is headed for the unknown, it is dark and packed full of people. This also represents how the Nazis viewed the Jews they were sending to the concentration camps: nameless, faceless people who they treated like animals. Individuals were stripped of their identity and, essentially, taken to slaughter.
