Wiesel's title compares the night with the sleepy passiveness of the world as the atrocities he describes take place. There is a fumbling in the darkness mood throughout the novel.
Wiesel also uses the metaphor of hell often in this book, especially the beginning. Hell as a metaphor seems cliche, but because of the horror and evil described in the novel, it becomes uniquely effective.
