Andersson, Theodore M. A Preface to the Nibelungenlied. Stanford University Press, 1987. Andersson discusses the Nibelungenlied in the context of the development of epic poetry, focusing on the rise of the romance genre and the ways that the Nibelungenlied participates in both genres. He provides extensive bibliographic entries for each of his chapters, and deals with the sources, literary context, and critical history of the Nibelungenlied.
