New York University does have excellent health services and personal counseling available to their students. I have been very pleased with my doctors (general practitioner and dermatologist) at the health center. Both have been very caring and generous. In fact, I have found all the staff at the Health Center to be compassionate and giving. I once called to set up an appointment because I'd been experiencing some pain, and the person...

I'll try not to repeat anything, but I would like to reinforce that going abroad at NYU is very popular and I absolutely recommend it. I don't know at stats off the top of my head but in my experience, almost everyone I know has gone abroad at some point (some even twice). The beauty of it is that NYU has a lot of money- a good portion of which has gone to establishing an international presence through abroad sites. For example, NYU has a...

Yes, there is a Greek system at NYU. Compared to state schools the proportion of students that join fraternities and sororities is much smaller, but it is also important to consider the size of NYU (50,000+ enrolled students). I don't have a specific percentage, but off hand I would venture to guess there are about 500 active students in Greek Life. NYU can cater to any interest you have and the Greek system is actually one of the largest...

No, not all freshmen live on campus. I have met people who commute from NJ or surrounding burroughs of NYC such as Brooklyn, Bronx, or Queens. It's not uncommon to meet commuters, but the majority of students live on campus. There are multiple strictly Freshman dorms: U-Hall (Union Square), 3rd North (12th and 3rd), Goddard (Washington Square), Rubin (10th and 5th), Hayden (Opposite side of Washington Square from Goddard), Brittany (10th and...

The city is your campus. I'm sure you've heard that a million times by now if you've read anything up on NYU. But seriously, it is. Walking to class you pass stores and restaurants and boutiques and all sorts of places. But, the funny thing is that even though there are tourists (not a lot actually around Washington Square (10th-Prince St), but if you have classes up near Union Square (14th St) you are SURROUNDED, the streets are still full...

I wouldn't say there is any one common career path, or even multiple common career paths. Every student at NYU is different, and considering that the largest school is CAS (College of Arts and Science), there are too many ways to go to be common. There are a variety of things to major in. I don't think there is any one stereotypical student, only stereotypes by schools.

People in Stern Business are known to be extremely hard-working and competitive considering its undergraduate program is (I'm almost positive) 2nd in the nation (Wharton at UPenn is 1st). However, all students in CAS (College of Arts and Sciences), Gallatin, Steinhardt, are equally respected. The Tisch School of the Arts is a very strong Arts school in all areas. The Clyde Davis Recording Program is very strong with grammy-winning professors....

Honestly, I don't know what percentage of students participate in Greek Life at NYU, but I'm pretty sure it's just a small minority. I only know one guy in a fraternity and no girls in a sorority. Unlike schools such as UNC-Chapel Hill, NCSU, U South Carolina (pretty much southern schools), NYU's greek life is predominantly service oriented unlike the others which are social oriented. Considering that aspect, it only makes sense that at NYU...

The only year that it's pretty difficult to live on campus is jr. year, because you have the last pick of dorms. Again, roommates can be win or lose. Unfortunately, I've had some pretty bad ones, but I've found that with the openness of the campus sometimes the only time you see your roommate is right before you go to bed! Even if you do have a bad roommate, it's not that big of a deal because it gives you the opportunity to meet more people...

Yes, the Student Counseling Center is a great place for lots of different resources. Every semester, you have the option of 10 free sessions with a therapist, where you can talk about anything that's on your mind. They also offer groups like stress management, dealing with eating disorders, friendship problems, etc. And the best part is that everything is free, so don't be afraid to get help if you need it.

Both Coles and Palladium have state-of-the-art facilities with fully equiped gyms and rock climbing walls. Many students who feel strongly about an issue can propose their concerns and solutions to the NYU community and in most cases others will take up their cause and help to make a difference.
Each class is structured differently at NYU. I've had only good experiences thus far with my professors, however this is something that varies with each personal situation.

Classes can be structured in lecture form, as well as smaller recitations to review the material at hand. Each professor has their own style of teaching, their own way of delivering information, and their own opinion on how to run their class.

A course syllabus will be...

I've personally experienced both living in NYU housing, as well as living off- campus and have had the best of experiences in both settings.

As a freshman, everyone is guaranteed a dorm, mine being University Hall, which was an "apartment-style" dorm with a built in kitchen, bathroom, and living area.
The environment off-campus is the rest of New York City, and with Greenwich Village as thecampus, students very frequently venture off campus and are even encouraged to do so. Many students visit the MoMA, Central Park, Chelsea Piers, China town, Little Italy, and Wall Street just to name a few things the city has to offer. Other popular choices are seeing off Broadway shows and walking through Times Square. Unlike suburban colleges,...

The student center hosts a lot of activies during the year that are open to all NYU students such as fairs, performances, and a variety of theme nights (the best part being free food). In the city, along with checking out the local bar scene, a lot of students are fans of holding dorm parties. If you join a team, they will most likely throw parties on...

Yes, all freshmen live on campus. Most people live on campus all 4 years. The roommate-matching system consists of 3 extremely vague questions, so it's pretty much random. Some roommates end up as best friends, some don't. I haven't heard of many horror stories, except when two people who are BOTH hard-to-live-with end up together. If you're really concerned about living with people you get along with well, consider applying to one of the...

NYU currently has 9 study abroad campuses on 4 continents, and we are soon opening a new one in Tel Aviv, Israel and a new full University campus in Abu Dhabi. Freshmen in all schools (except for Gallatin) must take an introductory essay writing course called "Writing the Essay." If you are in the College of Arts and Science, that is the only essay course you must take.
