the tannery plays a major role in drastically changing the lives of rukmani and her family... earlier the family lives with peace and conent by earning food and money through their peace of land but when the tannery opens in the village.... it slowly turns towards urbanisation. people start to leave their traditional works particularly agriculture become a part of industrialisation. rukmanis two sons also go for work in the tannery and her one son gets killed by the guards in an unsuccessful attempt to steal calfskin frm the tannery..........after few years the tannery takes over the land on which nathan works and jobless and hpoeless and landless they have to move to the city to their son murugan for their survival
