Madame Loisel possessed natural beauty. She did not need a family legacy or a position in society to be seen as attractive or valuable; she already had all of the characteristics and traits that caused her to been seen as such. Because Madame Loisel was innately graceful, beautiful, and charming and because she had the ability to make the most of those gifts, she was as ladylike as even a member of the most prestigious family. However, that did not mean that she had the benefits of wealth that she so deeply desired, such as the freedom to purchase material luxuries. It is her discontent, which is a result of her beauty and the sense of entitlement it brings about in Madame Loisel, that causes her to eventually lose her beauty.
