    Monsieur Loisel is content with the simple life he leads with his wife, Mathilde. However, he wants her to be happy and he surprises her with tickets to a ball so she can be with "all the really big people.'' His surprise, intended to make Madame Loisel happy, leads to her borrowing the necklace from her wealthy friend.
