Posted by gbeatty on Thursday September 25, 2008 at 5:54 PMThe final line of the story is as follows:
"Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was worth at most only five hundred francs!"
This relates to real life because Mathilde acted throughout the story on what she thought to be the case, or what she thought should be the case, as people so often do. She mistook appearance for reality. She did this with herself, mistaking youth and beauty for some innate quality, she did this with society, mistaking the pretty show for what is important, and she did this with the necklace. That's why this story is a classic; the irony is deep and true.

Mrs. Forrestier should have told Mathilde that the necklace was fake before she let her borrow it. Also, Mathilde should have told Mrs. Forrestier that she lost the necklace. Had she done so, she could have avoided having to labor for so long to buy a new one. Both parties (the Loisels and Mrs. Forrestier) should have been truthful with each other!

Some people make life seem harder than what it really it is, with all their negativity.
If people were more honest and would think more positively, maybe life would be a tad bit easier.

The ending of "The Necklace" relates to real life in that people sometimes make assumptions based on stereotypes. In the story, the main character thought since her friend was rich her necklace was real. Another way it relates to real life is people may not tell the truth when they lose or break something for fear of consequences. In the story, when she loses the necklace, instead of telling the truth, she says its broken and buys a new one.
