The sacrifices that Losisels make in trying to replace the necklace bring significant changes in their characters. And it is in this developmental change that the crux of the story The Necklace lies. The hardships change their attitude towards life and their philosophy sufficiently. It is a change for the better or an improvement of sorts through a lot of austerity and asceticism.

The couple, especially the wife realizes how wrong and unfair it is to supplement the reality of poverty with a false and self-demeaning garb of plenitude.  The materialist's desire for money and glitz go away and somewhere down the line the Losisels learn the value of honesty, sincerity and hard work in life. This is a shift from absurd fantasy to practicality. This is a philosophical shift too from typical social hypocrisy and artifice to a kind of dedicated pursuit of a promise made.

In the short story "The Necklace" the Losisels are determined to replace the necklace after its loss.  The man borrowed as much money and uses up their savings as he could.  As a result the couple has had to work extra jobs for ten years with fewer luxuries than they had before.  They are physically tired and have aged through the process faster than they would have had they not have had to work so hard.

The internal change has been most evident in Mrs. Losisel.  She has found accomplishment in her act of repayment and learned a valuable lesson that materialistic things are not as important as she once had thought.  She has matured through the process.
