Well, we don't know for sure that she lost it at the party. She had it at the party, and somewhere between the party and her home, she notices the necklace is missing. She and her husband retrace their steps, but the necklace is not found. Rather than confessing (and discovering the truth about the necklace being a reproduction/fake), Madame Forestier and her husband work very hard for years to purchase a replacement necklace for her friend.
