Although he prefers to call himself a poet, N. Scott Momaday is best known for his novel, House Made of Dawn, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction the year following its publication in 1968; a second novel, The Ancient Child, appeared in 1989. Other important prose works are autobiographical. The Journey of Tai-me, privately published in 1967, became part of The Way to Rainy Mountain, an exploration of personal and cultural history, which came out in 1969.
