Zingara, La.

Opera by GAETANO DONIZETTI, 1822, first performed in Naples. Zingara, a young Gypsy woman, defies traditional Neapolitan suspicion of Gypsies as thieves and villains by helping to reunite two separated lovers, foiling a joint suicide, and brings them eternal happiness. But, being so wonderful, could she really be a Gypsy? Alas, no—she is revealed as a missing daughter of an unjustly imprisoned nobleman. So much for breaking Gypsy stereotypes!
