Ziegfeld Follies

Series of spicy REVUES produced by Florenz Ziegfeld (1867-1932), inaugurated in 1907. These revues always featured many beautiful young women (he advertised his shows as "glorifying the American girl"). The shows were produced annually until 1925. Three more shows were produced during Ziegfeld's lifetime, and four more were produced posthumously, the last in 1957. Songs and sketches were by various songwriters and writers.

Musically, the most successful editions of the Ziegfeld Follies were those of IRVING BERLIN. Berlin contributed one of his most enduring tunes, A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody, to the 1919 edition. He wrote the entire score and lyrics for the 1927 revue. Other famous participants included Nora Bayes (Shine On Harvest Moon), Bert Williams (Nobody), FANNY BRICE (Indian Love Call), and EDDIE CANTOR. Ziegfeld was also an independent producer, with credits including Show Boat, Rosalie, Whoopie, and Bitter Sweet.
