Ut
The first of the solmization syllables, the opening syllable of the HYMN Ut queant laxis (That they might be relaxed . . .) assigned by Guido d'Arezzo, to correspond with the TONIC of the MODE. Because Ut lacks a vowel at the end and is therefore difficult to sing, it was changed to DO(H), except in French nomenclature, where Ut is retained as the note C. Ut is the only syllable in Guido's hymn that constitutes an entire word (the rest of the lines begin with the initial vocables of the words).
