Unanswered Question, The
Chamber orchestra work by CHARLES IVES, 1908, sometimes subtitled A Cosmic Landscape. A solo trumpet propounds the "unanswered question" in an ATONAL setting, echoed in confusion by WOODWINDS, supported ethereally by STRINGS. The SCORE is remarkable because its components are written at different TEMPOS in different METERS. The work was not performed until nearly 50 years after its composition, at which point it became an instant classic.
